Just the two of us: Lafayette Neurosurgery and Spine make it official

When it comes to treating the spine, the two main parts – the vertebrae and the spinal cord – need two different forms of expertise: neurosurgery and orthopedics, to be precise. So it makes a lot of sense to unite the two disciplines.

That’s exactly what prompted the combination of SCL Health Medical Group (soon to be Intermountain Health) clinics Lafayette Neurosurgery and Lafayette Spine.

“This combined clinic has been a long time in the making,” said Dr. Chris Awtrey, Vice President and Chief Medical Officer for Peaks Region Medical Group on the Front Range. “It took a lot of people’s hard work to realize the vision of bringing these two groups under one roof to provide comprehensive spine care. To have them together in one beautiful new space is amazing.”

Dr. Awtrey, along with Peaks Region President Mark Korth, Regional Vice President of Operations Lee Syphus, and Physical Medicine & Rehab Service Line Practice Administrator Judy Rickert, officially welcomed the combined clinic to the Intermountain fold at a ribbon-cutting ceremony last Thursday.

The clinic not only offers multidisciplinary care from some of the top experts in the state, including orthopedic surgeon Daniel R. Possley, DO, and neurosurgeon Kevin K.H. Chow, MD, PhD, but it also employs some of the most advanced technology available. With one of just three EOS machines in Colorado (and the only one on the northern Front Range), the clinic’s experts can capture full-body X-rays of the spine in motion, incredibly valuable for diagnosing spine conditions of all kinds.

It wasn’t the only combination to be celebrated during the Sept. 21 event. Korth capped the ceremony off with a look toward the organizational big picture: “This amazing, unique center connects neuro and ortho spine, but it also connects these providers to 3,800 other providers across the enterprise. It’s that kind of connection that allows these providers to truly honor our mission to help people live the healthiest lives possible.”
