Get to Know Tom Neuhauser, MD

Take a few moments to learn more about your colleague Thomas Neuhauser, MD, Laboratory Medical Director at Good Samaritan. The self-proclaimed “Fabio of Pathology” has served on our medical staff for three years.

What inspires you?

My wife. She had a career as a bank analyst, but always had a dream to become a lawyer. She went back to law school to start a new career, and excelled while she was there. She is now an immigration lawyer, that represents the kids separated from their parents on the Southern Border.  Many of their stories are terrible, and she is basically their lifeline. I could not do what she does. ... I would bring those stories home.

How long have you been practicing medicine and what led you to this profession?

I graduated from my residency in 1997 and completed my fellowship in 1999. Before I went to med school, I worked in a lab for a year after college. I very much enjoyed the experience and respected the Pathologist and lab manager who mentored me while I was there. I did not think I would end up in the lab but circled back after the internship.

How would you describe yourself?

Social and engaging. I have also decided to try to grow out my hair for the first time since I left the military, so I will be the “Fabio of Pathologists.”

What is something you are most proud of accomplishing, personally or professionally?

Finding a great life partner. Co-writing a book on physical exam for residents. Running the Wild West relay 18 years in a row (a relay race between Fort Collins and Steamboat...about 200 miles. Six people teams).

When you’re not working, where would we find you/what would you be doing?

At the gym, hiking, cooking, at a movie, hanging out in Steamboat with my wife. Catching a Broadway show.

What’s the best thing about being a member of the medical staff here?

My fantastic colleagues and partners.

Can you share a little bit about your family?

My beautiful wife (as above). And I have two great children. My oldest, Tasha, is 27 and teaches horseback riding in Fort Collins. My youngest, Alexa, is 19 and is in school.

What’s your favorite way to relax?

Sit on the bike and watch a show. Hike. Watch the Broncos.

What do you want your colleagues to know about your approach to patient care?

Treat patients as if they were your own family. Pay attention to detail. Communicate.
