Good Sam Physician Leader Profile: Melissa Hippely, MD

Melissa Hippely, MD, began her career in hospital medicine and internal medicine when she joined the Good Samaritan medical staff in 2010. She is the current Past Chief of Staff and previously served as Quality Chair and Chair of Medicine.

When did you begin practicing medicine and what led you to this profession?

I started medical school a little later than some at about age 30. My interest in the human condition and experience and the biological sciences including physiology led me to medicine after a mentor gave me the confidence to apply. I completed my Internal Medicine training at the University of Colorado and Saint Joseph’s Hospital and attended the University of Colorado School of Medicine before coming to Good Samaritan.  

What inspires you?

People and their stories interest and inspire me.  I’m inspired by nature and my family. 

How would you describe yourself?

Down to earth, transparent, kind, loyal, and a pursuer of excellence. 

When you’re not working, where would we find you/what would you be doing?  

When not working, I’m being “mom” and “daughter” and you could find me at home putzing about, walking in the neighborhood or park, running my daughter, Rae, around or helping my aging parents.  

What’s the best thing about being a member of the medical staff here?

Good Samaritan has a really great team to work with. 

What do you want your colleagues to know about your approach to patient care?

As a hospitalist, my approach to patient care includes teamwork, advocacy, and education in addition to seeking to understand all the medical issues present. I strive to understand patient and family care goals in addition to facilitating care and providing education. Additionally, I greatly value and rely on the other vital team members who care for and serve the hospitalized patient.
