Get to Know Good Sam’s Brian Nordstrom Lane, MD

Brian Nordstrom Lane, MD, is a hospitalist and chair of credentials at Good Sam. He’s also our featured Physician Leader for August 2023. After earning his medical degree from Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine, Dr. Nordstrom Lane completed his residency in internal medicine at the University of Washington in 2007. His medical career has been focused on hospital medicine, which has sent him across the world. He cared for patients in the Seattle area and in rural New Zealand before joining the medical staff at Good Samaritan in 2012.

What’s the best thing about being a member of the medical staff?

Up until New Year's Eve 2021, I would have listed the best thing as the collegiality and investment of the providers, nurses, pharmacists, allied health staff – and the people who sustain the building and its occupants, the environmental and dietary services. Folks show up at Good Sam to not only do their jobs and do them well, but also to make a difference in the lives of patients. But after our home in Louisville burned down in the Marshall Fire, my answer changed.

Post-fire, I now appreciate that folks show up at Good Sam not only to make a difference in the lives of their patients but also in the lives of their colleagues. I was so grateful and humbled by the outpouring of concern, generosity, and support I received after the fire from my Good Sam family. Thank you, thank you Good Sammies.

What’s your favorite way to relax?

I most often relax and recharge outside. My favorite day in Fall begins on the Oregon coast with a morning run through the trees, followed by foraging for mushrooms and crabbing in a bay with family and friends on an afternoon incoming tide. In the evening, we prepare something yummy and share in the bounty of the forest and the sea.

Who makes up your immediate family?

I met my wife, Robyn, in med school in Minnesota and we have been married for 21 years. She practices as a family medicine doctor in Boulder.  We have two daughters, Rowen and Juna. Rowen is in 5th grade and loves to dance. Juna is in 9th grade and is playing ultimate frisbee at her new school.

We have two pets: Jaguar, the cat, who has a sinus problem and just wants to be in your lap, and Willow, the dog, who wants to join Jaguar on your lap but is a bit long and weighs 65 pounds.
