Five medical staff at St. Mary’s receive compliments

St. Mary’s Regional Hospital often receives notes of gratitude from patients and family members, as well as words of recognition, from colleagues and associates about physicians and clinicians who have provided extraordinary care and service.

Patient family to Clinician Kudos

I just wanted to say thank you! My brother was admitted to St. Mary's with a stroke. They were able to retrieve the clot, but there was some damage. They found that he has stage 4 pancreatic cancer that has spread to his liver and lungs. Of course, this was a total shock because he had no symptoms ... Everyone from the Neuro interventionalist to the ICU and the 9th-floor teams were so kind and caring. We’ve had consistently excellent and compassionate care and input from physicians in many specialties. Watching Creed Ott, MD, communicate with my brother was amazing. Dr. Ott was extremely helpful in helping him try to process and understand his diagnosis and treatment options. I think this was what helped him come to the decision not to go through treatment. He just wanted to come home and be with his family for as long as possible. Carol Fowler, MD, was also amazing talking with my niece and two nephews about the diagnosis, disease progression, and next steps ... My family couldn't be more grateful for my brother’s care ... While the whole family was in total shock, with the help from everyone at St Mary's, we can begin to process and move forward from this devastating diagnosis. Please express our heartfelt gratitude to all.

My son presented in the ED with a known antibiotic-resistant infection. He had sepsis secondary to pyelonephritis. This was his second round of sepsis in three weeks, and he had been sick and battling infections for more than two months. As a mother, I had been extremely worried about his overall decline throughout that timeframe. I had done everything in my power to get him the healthcare that he needed. Over that two-month timespan, he had been treated poorly by other providers ... My son’s treatment by Westin Amberge, MD, was in stark contrast. As soon as we hit the room, his team listened attentively to his history, leading to prompt treatment of his sepsis. Dr. Amberge communicated effectively and efficiently, laying out the plan of care and taking action. He showed compassion and concern and treated my son with respect and dignity.  For the first time as a mother, I knew my son was in good hands. He came back regularly with updates to my son's plan of care, letting us know who had been consulted and the next steps, which reassured me we were going to get the help that my child needed sooner rather than later. This child is my world, and on that day, Dr. Amberge saved my world from falling apart. I understand this moment may not have been as meaningful to Dr. Amberge as it was to me, but that does not take away how important it was.

I would like to recognize Andrew Miller, PA, and Patrick Vernon, RN, for their actions and the exemplary care provided to my wife. These professionals oversaw her care in the ED when after a fall she suffered a dislocated shoulder. They took the actions necessary to first control her pain so X-rays could be taken to determine the cause. They were both calm, attentive, and compassionate. The treatment my wife received was excellent.
